The most common requirement for remote workers is to access their e-mails. In the past, the only method that was available was to make a connection to the company mailserver and then download the mail to a PC or laptop. Whilst this enabled people to work from home with relative ease, it precluded the access of mails whilst away from the machines. Even the use of an internet café for e-mail access was not possible due to the lack of ability to configure an e-mail client at these locations.

Fortunately, there are now many ways to receive e-mails.

Webmail

Providers such as Hotmail and Yahoo have been providing e-mail access via the web for several years. What many companies do not realise is that they can offer the same services to their staff for little or no cost.

Customers who are running the Microsoft Exchange mail system already have a state of the art webmail service bundled in with the package. This is called Outlook Web Access (OWA). Whilst OWA is an impressive application in terms of features and accessibility, it is less impressive when it comes to security.
